Carried Away.... Today in the News 8/27/2014:
Opening Statement:
I have lived in California since 1980. In that time I have only felt 3 earthquakes and never have a felt an aftershock. So with the recent quake in Napa I am reminded me of what is the difference between a new quake and an aftershock? Having pose the question to Laura Skirde she pointed me into the direction of USGS for the proper answer. I received that answer via Twitter yesterday. "Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur in the same general area following a larger event or mainshock." My follow up question to USGS was "So when is an aftershock not an aftershock but a new quake? Does it need to be larger than the original? Thank you" The response I got was "See the section on aftershocks here: http://on.doi.gov/1zs1nX5 "
Here is that answer:
An “Aftershock” can be greater than the initial earthquake. PARTIALLY FACT: “Foreshock" and "aftershock" are relative terms. Foreshocks are earthquakes that precede larger earthquakes in the same location. Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur in the same general area during the days to years following a larger event or "main shock”. So if an “aftershock” is bigger than its “main shock”, we change the names and call the first one the foreshock and the large “aftershock” becomes the main shock. Most aftershocks occur on the same fault as the main shock, but other faults nearby and extensions of the main shock fault will also produce aftershocks. Historically, deep earthquakes are much less likely to be followed by aftershocks than are shallow earthquakes.
Now not only do I know but we all know. Thank you USGS.

Ken's Manly Minute: Be A Better Wingman
Being a wing man means making the sacrifice for your buddy. The evening is all about helping him meet someone special, even if that means you go home alone or without any contact for the whole evening. But, some guys get all frustrated and selfish mid way through the evening so here are the 5 key points to being a better wingman. Recon. Marketing. Altruism. Sacrifice. Morale.

Final Recap:
Favorite Story of the Day: 2 for 1:
Sugar:
I suffer from many years of being diabetic and I have Diabetic Neuropathy because of it. So today's favorite story of the day is very near to my heart. Juggler Barry Friedman was in studio talking about his new book. I Love Me More Than Sugar. Barry is going around using his juggling to teach not only parents but kids that cutting sugar out of your diet you will live longer and will not have the medical issues I have with the neuropathy.
Barry used a bowling ball that represents 8 lbs of what a child will eat in sugar in 3 weeks. Then in the 9am hour he tried to Whip Tina and Cody into giving up sugar by whipping grains while Tina held in her hand and Cody held in his mouth.
Small Business Expo:
Today's favorite story isn't really about the Small Business Expo Mark was at though that is very important. it was his action during Teens Tunes that has everyone talking. If you have seen the movie Officer and a Gentleman then you know Richard Gere comes in sweeps the woman off her feet and walks off. Today Mark recreated it and what is now being called The Reporter and the Gentleman. It is the fun side of this story that makes it today's Favorite Story of the Day.
However Mark is the keynote speaker at the Small Business Expo taking place today in Stockton he spoke to City leaders and small business owners before taking the podium. Mark even stopped off for breakfast at The Ranch Coffee Shop in Stockton before the Expo.
Dang:
Dang it! Today's Check This Out from Courtney she talked about the new coconut chips that are good for you called. Dang. It appeared Courtney, Cody, Marianne, and Ken all liked these chips
Mas Tequila:
Last week in Show and Tell Ken talked about Fried Tequila shots. Ken challenged Amy to find someone to make them and if on cue Chris Tucker answered the call and Amy headed to Hook n Ladder to try this and other deep fried alcohol. Talk about Fair Food I bet these Tequilla shots would be a hit for sure.
Brown Grass is Sexy:
Today on Good Day Cambi was with a local dad who is teaching his sons not only about business but why we have brown grass. So the kids are making and selling their own signs saying Brown Grass is Sexy. For $15 or Best Offer you can own one of these signs in your yard.
Watch Dog:
A Watch Dog Group is looking for more dads, granddads uncles etc. This Group of dads volunteer at their childrens school in Orangevale.
TBD Fest:
Coming up October 3-5 in West Sacramento is TBD Fest. Celebrate food from folks like LowBrau and music from Blondie and more.
Ninja Moms:
Kristina was in Roseville checking out a Gym that has Ninja Warrior Course. In the 9am hour she continued from the gym as they demonstrated how the moms use their kids to get a workout in with the kids. Then at the end of the show the instructor took the ice bucket challenge with a twist. She is a black belt so she broke blocks of ice tied to a bucket hanging above that spilled water on her head.
Playing with Food:
It's important to get kids eating healthy foods so why not have a Food Art Class. Coming up Wholefoods Market is doing just that and today on Good Day Amy was with Stephanie Dodd learning how to make food are with fruits and vegetables.
Dishin:
Today is Wednesday so Tina was Dishin With Chittlin N Thangs inside Moon River Inn. This Southern style restaurant serves everything from Jambalaya, Chicken and Waffles, Red Beans and Rice, Peach Cobbler, Black Eyed Peas, Chittlin, Corn bread and much more. This was the feature this week that was postponed from Sunday due to the Napa Quake.
Good Day Nutshell:
Throw it or Keep It:
Marianne's Daily List talked about foods that might have expiration dates but still good if not opened. Wine is good for 3 years. Peanut Butter is good for 9 months and so many other things you wouldn't think about are still good for quite awhile.
Embarrassing me:
In today's Daily Joe Marianne showed a video of a dad that took a video of his daughter taking selfies in the back seat of the car totally embarrassing her.
Wingman:
Men when you go out looking for the lady of the evening or life you need a wingman. So today on Good Day Ken talked about 5 important things to remember when being a good Wingman in his "Manly Minute".
Tomorrow:
As we end today and look forward to tomorrow Gina from Thrift Town should be in with another GREAT DIY Project. Tune in starting at 430am for all the Good Day fun.

Being a wing man means making the sacrifice for your buddy.
