D-Day Remembrance..... Today in the News 6/6/2014:
Opening Statement:
70 years ago today one of our GREATEST Historical events that shaped our history took place. Over the next few minutes I will be taking you back to 1944 D-Day. President Eisenhower selected June 5, 1944, as the date for the invasion; however, bad weather on the days leading up to the operation caused it to be delayed for 24 hours. On the morning of June 5, after his meteorologist predicted improved conditions for the following day, Eisenhower gave the go-ahead for Operation Overlord. Later that day, more than 5,000 ships and landing craft carrying troops and supplies left England for the trip across the Channel to France, while more than 11,000 aircraft were mobilized to provide air cover and support for the invasion.
By dawn on June 6, thousands of paratroopers and glider troops were already on the ground behind enemy lines, securing bridges and exit roads. The amphibious invasions began at 6:30 a.m. The British and Canadians overcame light opposition to capture beaches codenamed Gold, Juno and Sword, as did the Americans at Utah Beach. U.S. forces faced heavy resistance at Omaha Beach, where there were over 2,000 American casualties. However, by day’s end, approximately 156,000 Allied troops had successfully stormed Normandy’s beaches.According to some estimates, more than 4,000 Allied troops lost their lives in the D-Day invasion, with thousands more wounded or missing.
Many of these men who survived this day are now in their 90's and will not be able to attend the special ceremonies in the future. As I said on Memorial Day and the recent passing of one of the Tuskegee Airman we need to preserve the memories of these GREAT Soldiers who helped shaped our world that we live in today. If your Vet from D-Day or even WWII in general are still with us get their stories on video do not let this major part of our history go. They are so important to us. Yes we have Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, The Longest Day, The Big Red One and Where Eagles Dare to help tell the Hollywood stories but we need real stories. History books can give you words on a page but personal stories can give us a lifetime.
I want to thank ALL of the men who took part in D-Day, June 6, 1944. You all live in my heart and you are never out of my mind.

Recap:
Good Day Sacramento:
430/5am:
Ken is live in NY and the weather has become beautiful as California Chrome gets set at a chance of history tomorrow. Marianne showed Joann's Fabric getting the rights to Frozen material and Cody showed photos of then and now (1944 - today) of France in Show and Tell. Tina is in studio today and today's 5am Club Member was introduced. The Daily List was all about Donuts on National Donut Day. The question of the day was Your favorite Ice Cream Sundae. Today's Show us Yours California Chrome Love.
6am:
In this hour Ken continued from New York including talking to Tom Durkin who is calling his last race tomorrow after 43 years and then Ken went to the roof. Mark was at Mather checking out one of the most beautiful planes from WWII The B-29 Flying Fortress (FiFi has a special connection to Mark. His dad was the Navigator on the plane). Cody talked to Nat Wolff star of Fault in our Stars and like the character Nat plays Cody smashed a trophy. Marianne had her Daily Joe with 2 of the 3 stories about D-Day.
7am:
Ken continued from the track at Belmont in Elmont, NY. Mark took flight and landed in the B-29. Discovery Museum was in studio slapping us with science and cake pop Dirty Comets as they teach about Outer Space this weekend. Melissa was in Lodi learning how to bottle wine before their event Saturday. Ettore's was in studio for National Donut Day with his new creation Dough-Netto.
8am:
Melissa was in Lodi continuing her Winery tour. Ken was in New York for all things California Chrome. Marianne and Cody talked with a local Turlock shop that makes jewelry out of bullets. Mark had infotainment talking about Edge of Tomorrow and showed his stunt from the set. Teen's Tunes was played and New study shows people are getting Prenups for Social Media posts. So today's topic was Would you sign a Social Media Prenup?
9am:
Cody and Julissa teamed up to bring the 9am hour and today's #9amtopic. Tina was with Debbi Kennedy aka Dish the Drive Thru learning different ways to save money with making salads plus it uses all fresh vegetables. Melissa was in Lodi as Vets got Free donuts on National Donut Day at the American Legion. Seniors are having their Annual Ms. Senior California tomorrow and Sean was there checking it out. Mark was at Cal Expo for Duck Dash taking place. Marianne was also at Cal Expo checking out the betting window and all things Horse Racing before the big race tomorrow. Speaking of the race tomorrow Ken gave us an exclusive look into the Jockey Room, Silk Room and the Jockey Lounge. Tina's final question was I feel healthy when eating___ Finally we have danced into the weekend.
Final Thoughts:
D-Day:
As I stated above in my Opening today marks the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. Celebrations of this day continue all over the world including the Statue of Liberty having 1 million rose pedals dropped at her base. Also to celebrate was one photographer who took pictures of France in 1944 and then today to show the remarkable differences as shown in Cody's part of Show and Tell. This was so cool to see. Marianne even had a Daily Joe D- Day Edition which was very cool.
B-29:
The Flying Fortress aka B-29 is in Sacramento this weekend. Only a few of these beautiful planes can still fly and Mark has a very special connection to this plane. FiFi was the same plane his dad flew in as a Navigator. You can still see the plane Today - Sunday at Mather Airfield.
California Love:
The Belmont Stakes is FINALLY HERE!!! One day until Race Day so Ken and Camera Guy Dave gave us exclusive tour of all things at the track in Elmont, NY. Ken even talked to retiring announcer and a legend in the sport of horse racing Tom Durkin. Tom will be riding off into the sunset following the race tomorrow. Ken also went inside the Jockey Room, Lounge and Silk room as they prepare not only for the races today but of course the big one tomorrow. Marianne even went to Cal Expo to explain the $2 bet. If California Chrome wins at the odds he currently is at you win $3.50. Not much money but you still have some history you can hold onto.
Spill the Wine:
Tomorrow in Lodi E2 Family Winery is giving a tour of their winery. Today Melissa got a first hand look at all things E2. She even got to see how they bottle the wine as well as the harvest. If you love wine be sure to check this out.
Seniors:
Seniors need love too. No not like the 31 year old dating 5 women over the age of 60 including one who is 91. That is just weird. These Seniors are attempting to become Ms. California Senior 2014 and you can attend for just $9 at Center of Praise Ministries in Sacramento at 1130am Saturday.
Donut Day:
Today is National Donut Day. While Supplies last Krispy Kreme is giving out FREE Donuts. Also getting FREE donuts are the Vets at the Lodi American Legion as seen on Good Day Today with Melissa.
Good Day Nutshell:
Today is manly about D-Day today and California Chrome trying to run to history tomorrow but also talked about was Duck Dash helping out local charities and Mark was at Cal Expo talking about it.
Debbi Kennedy was in studio showing ways to beat the Drive Thru with Salads you can make at home for cheaper more healthier ways.
Cody got to talk to Nat Wolff about his new movie in theaters today Fault in the Stars. Also in theaters today Edge of Tomorrow and Mark sat down with Emily Blunt who stars opposite Tom Cruise.
Ettore's was in the kitchen previewing their new tasty treat for Donut Day.
A Turlock Shop is making jewelry out of bullets and they look pretty amazing and finally the Discovery Museum is holding an event to teach your kids all about Outer space and Dirty Planets with Cake Pops and more.
Friday Dance Party:
