When I was growing up MTV killed the radio star, so did 24 Hour sports network and social media kill the local sports on local news?
It’s ironic on a day Sports rules the top story with the NBA keeping the Sacramento Kings in town I’m writing about the coverage or lack there of of sports news on local news networks.
News 10 allows 1-2 minutes of sports talk at the end of each newscast Monday-Friday & 3-4 minutes on the weekend with a 20 minute separate show late night on Sunday. The show is a bit boring but a novel idea with a wide variety of sports scores & highlights with one hot button topic round table with Brian May & Ryan Yamamoto.
Though at one time KCRA seemed to have ruled the local sports with the likes of the late Creighton Sanders followed by once sports guy Walt Gray then CNN’s Ron Hyde who both hung up the sneakers to become news anchors. Now KCRA has turned over their sportscast to former SF 49′er & Super Bowl winning backup running back Del Rodgers, who never passes up showing his ring. KCRA only allows about 1-3 minutes on average for sports.
CBS13 has no sport reporters at all.
Fox40 lead by long standing Jim Crandell allows 3-5 minutes a night on sports & in my opinion shows the best highlights. One of Jim’s Friday staples is the “Crybaby of the Week” which is where an athlete complains about something he / she does not approve of.
Each station with exception of CBS13 also has a special 15-20 minute special dedicated to HS Football during the season but there is many stories that can be told daily that should be. Whether that be NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, local colleges, HS or even Peewee. One thing I enjoyed is on May 14 Good Day Sacramento shared a story about a 76 year old local Coach giving back to the community by teaching kids not only baseball but life lessons as well. The other thing I enjoy on the weekends Good Day Sacramento sends reporters to peewee baseball or soccer games where young people participate in sports & is called Good Day at your Game.
So did 24 hour sport channels & today’s up to minute sport updates via social media kill the local sportscaster star? Well we found out that though the song says Video Killed the Radio Star they actually just took a vacation so lets hope local news can bring back & make a priority to local sports once again.
*This was written as an opinion because though requests were sent no media outlet commented on this topic. In the words of the late Jack Buck: “See you tomorrow night.”
